Summary
AC electric haulage of MGR trains is uncommon. However this long-distance, once-a-week Speedlink service conveys a product called anthracite ‘duff’, a by-product of the processing at Coedbach which is conveyed to a plant in Scotland to be turned into briquettes for the domestic market. It is powered by a pair of AC electrics north of Crewe and is formed of HDA hoppers, which differ from standard HAAs as they are permitted to run at 60mph when empty, instead of 45mph.
Maximum speed is 60mph. Year: 1989.
