Following the opening of the Channel Tunnel, it was intended to run through Eurostar services between the Continent and destinations north and west of London. Ultimately these never materialised, but there were some additional domestic services to and from Waterloo introduced as an interim measure. Two Cross Country HSTs were used to operate services linking Manchester / Birmingham via the WCML, and Edinburgh via the ECML. The set that ran from Edinburgh returned to Manchester, and vice-versa. On an unsettled November afternoon, drive the northbound service to Edinburgh between Peterborough and Newcastle. As it’s a Friday afternoon, it’s unlikely that this will be a straightforward run.
