Summary

The Summer 1987 timetable saw booked class 50 workings on the Portsmouth Direct route, as a means of positioning stock used on the Portsmouth to Exeter and return services. Drive 50039 “Implacable” on the afternoon northbound working as far as Woking. This loco and stock formed the 11.10 from Exeter earlier today. As there are no run-round facilities at Portsmouth Harbour, the train was hauled to and from Fratton yard by pilot 09001 in order to reverse.

Scenario run-through
This scenario should last around 65 minutes. Beginning at Portsmouth Harbour, traffic is busy until you leave Havant. The Network South East livery is beginning to spread in the area, though there is still plenty of BR blue around. This is the last timetable where class 33s are booked on Portsmouth – Cardiff services. The coast line to Southampton via Netley is yet to be electrified, so class 205 Hampshire units still hold sway on these trains.
After leaving Havant, it’s a fast dash to Guildford with lots of high speed thrash – perfect front coach window conditions. You may just catch up the previous stopping service on the approach to Guildford, where you are booked to overtake it. Then it’s a quick romp to Woking where your relief is awaiting.
