Before the cascade of Class 442 units to the Gatwick Express, they had a virtual monopoly on London-Poole/Weymouth services. This meant that in addition to PDL express trains, Class 444s were common on stopping services to Haslemere and Portsmouth via the PDL. On bright spring 2006 morning, take charge of 444020 on one such service the 10:45 Waterloo to Portsmouth & Southsea via Guildford.
