Cardiff Canton in South Wales were allocated six locos from 37426 to 37431 and their initial passenger duties included Spring/Summer turns on the Cambrian line to Aberystwyth & Pwllheli and a Sunday only service from Cardiff Central to Taunton.

37281 entered Crewe works for rebuilding as a 37/4 on the 03.10.85 and after working test trains received a heavy general overall on the 18.02.86 and renumbered 37428. On the 25.05.86 it worked the Sunday 2C26 1300 Cardiff to Taunton service followed by the weekly gathering of haulage bashers sampling some class 37 action.
