1Z50 07:35 London Paddington to Paignton
29th August 2022This is part 1 of 4 scenarios for the BHBP (Berks and Hants to Bristol and Penzance v2) route using the AP class 50.
On Saturday 26th March 2022, the “Springtime Hoovering in Devon Tour” (by UK Railtours) set off from London Paddington full of day trippers on a return to Paignton (Devon) with 50007 and 50049 at the helm. In part 1 you drive 50007 from Exeter to Paignton as 1Z50.
We start on the move a few miles north of Exeter, approaching Cowley Bridge Junction. There’s a Cross Country Voyager ahead, so prepare to slow down.
We’ve no scheduled stops but one pathing allowance at Newton Abbot, so we should arrive in Paignton around 11:30am where you’ve about a 10-minute wait (worth having ASyncKeys set up if you want to skip forward at this point). You have a max speed of 95mph but are expected to travel between 60-70mph for the passengers to take in the scenery, especially along the Dawlish coastline.
After dropping off our passengers at Paignton we head to Goodrington Yard Sidings where the stock will be stabled for a few hours. On arrival in the sidings you’ll uncouple 50007 from the rest of the consist, run around, and couple to (what was) the rear coach in readiness for our afternoon ‘top and tail’ run to Okehampton (part 2).
Much time and research has gone into these scenarios to make them as realistic and authentic as possible. All timings (including AI) are based on the real times on the day from Realtime Trains (or as close to those as possible given the constraints and limitations in TS). I’ve used exact numbering of units and coaches/consists where known and possible – with great attention to detail, especially for the player train (with correct coach numbers and facing in the direction exactly as it was on the day). I’ve viewed numerous videos and photos on social media to ensure the experience for you is as real as possible.
There are a couple of things missing from the scenario, simply because they do not exist in TS. First off there are the JIA wagons seen at Exeter Riverside Yard (replaced with TS alternatives). And at Paignton after your arrival, I understand there was an inbound trip on the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway hauled by Large Prairie GWR class 5205 engine 5239 “Goliath”. I’m sorry that I’ve not been able to replicate this but I have improvised with a set of PDSR coaches and a resident class 37, which I know was in operation on the day. Finally, I cannot place the many hundreds of passengers and spectators that were out in force to support the tour in the scenario, so please try to imaging hoards of class 50 fans lining the route!
