SCENARIO PACK 5

VOLUME 1

WEST COAST MAIN LINE OVER SHAP 1992 – 1998

USER MANUAL

Hello, and thank you for purchasing this scenario pack. This pack has been researched using archive Working Timetables, rolling stock allocation and livery records, photographic records, and other source materials. What you see is hopefully a realistic representation of the varied traffic to be seen on this scenic section of the West Coast Main Line between 1992 and 1998.

Covering the last years of British Rail, and into the early days of privatisation, express passenger services to and from London are mostly in the hands of class 87 and 90 locomotives with push-pull rakes and mark 3 DVTs. Alongside these can be seen various Cross Country services worked by a mixture of class 86 locomotives and mark 2 coaches, High Speed Trains, and class 158 DMUs.

Regional services, usually in the hands of class 156s, operate along the southern end of the route from Manchester Airport to both Barrow-in-Furness (diverging at Carnforth), and Windermere (branching off at Oxenholme). The branches to Morecambe and Heysham head west just north of Lancaster, while Cumbrian Coast services can be seen both between Lancaster and Carnforth, and on arrival at Carlisle. The latter station also sees services converge from Newcastle via Hexham, Leeds via Settle, and Glasgow / Ayr via Dumfries, as well as the West Coast Main Line continuing to Glasgow or Edinburgh via Carstairs.

Freight services are equally varied. The division of British Rail into sectors prior to privatisation created a strange situation on this electrified route. Railfreight Distribution, which included Freightliner services, was the only division to have electric locomotives. Traffic from other divisions such as petroleum and metals which would once have been hauled by electric locos, was now hauled over the WCML by those sector’s own diesel locos.

SCENARIO DETAILS:

1C21 16.25 London Euston to Oxenholme / 5A06 20+09 Oxenholme to Wembley Intercity Depot

Traction: 90002 + Mark 3 DVT

Duration: 70 minutes

Route covered: Preston – Oxenholme – Preston

Saturdays during the Winter 1997/98 timetable see this unusual working which terminates in Oxenholme, before returning empty all the way to Wembley. You have just relieved a London driver at Preston and will take this train forward to Oxenholme, calling at Lancaster. You will then return empty stock back to Preston where the same London driver, suitably rested, will relieve you and take this set back to Wembley Intercity Depot. Year: 1997

1M18 07.20 Glasgow Central to London Euston

Traction: 86254

Duration: 105 minutes

Route covered: Carlisle – Preston

The class 90 propelling this morning up train has failed on this snowy morning in the Carstairs area. Fortunately a class 56 which was heading light engine to Tyne Yard was able to assist the train forward. In the meantime, arrangements have been made to hire 86254 from EWS to continue with the journey south. The train has just arrived in Carlisle 96 minutes late being hauled by 56058, which is just being detached to continue its journey to Tyne Yard. You will attach 86254 to the front of the train and continue the journey as far as Preston, calling at Oxenholme, and Lancaster. Maximum speed is 100mph. There is a 40mph temporary speed restriction in force around one mile north of Carnforth, and a 50mph emergency speed restriction in the Garstang area. Year : 1997.

1M26 12.03 Edinburgh to Bolton

Traction: 158750

Duration: 85 Minutes

Route covered: Carlisle – Preston

On a wet Thursday afternoon drive one of Virgin Cross Country’s small fleet of class 158s on this lunchtime southbound departure from Edinburgh. You will call at Penrith, Oxenholme, and Preston where you will be relieved. This train is a through working to Manchester Airport. As platform space is restricted at the airport, at Bolton this unit will attach to a North Western Trains class 156 working a Windermere to Manchester Airport service. The pair will then leave the airport at 16.45 and divide again at Bolton, the 156 continuing to Windermere via Wigan North Western, and this 158 to Glasgow Central via Chorley. Year: 1997.

1S89 16.25 London Euston to Glasgow Central

Traction: 86101

Duration: 75 minutes

Route covered: Preston – Carlisle

On a fine late Summer evening drive one of the premier London to Glasgow expresses between Preston and Carlisle. Your train has arrived on time and all the indications are that this should be a good run. You will call at Lancaster, and then non-stop to Carlisle where you will be relieved. You have one of the small fleet of class 86/1 locos and a rake of mark 3s this evening, so your maximum speed is 110mph. Year: 1992.

An alternative version of this scenario has been added from update 2.0,
giving the option to drive with class 87 loco 87025.

2C43 18.14 Preston to Barrow-in-Furness

Traction: 156420

Duration: 40 Minutes

Route covered: Preston – Carnforth

On a foggy October evening, drive this portion working off a service from Manchester Airport which divides at Preston. Release the doors and set-up for departure. You will then depart at 18.14, calling at Lancaster, and Carnforth. Year: 1997

6C42 06.25 Stanlow to Dalston

Traction: 37428

Duration: 90 minutes

Route covered: Grayrigg Loops – Carlisle

Once underway you are booked to recess again at Shap Harrisons Sidings for a passenger train. You will then proceed to Carlisle where you are booked relief. Maximum speed is 60mph. It’s a good job you checked and filled the sand boxes this morning, looking at the clouds ahead you will probably need it. Year: 1992.

7C42 15.52 Heysham Power Station to Sellafield B.N.F.L.

Traction: 31270

Duration: 45 minutes

Route covered: Heysham Power Station – Morecambe – Carnforth

On a September Monday afternoon, drive the weekly loaded nuclear waste service from Heysham destined for the British Nuclear Fuel plant at Sellafield. Your train is all set to go and your guard has given you your loading slip. You may proceed towards the stop board, and then obey all instructions. Your guard has possession of the train staff, which allows only one train between Bare Lane signalbox and Heysham. Attached to the staff is an Annett’s Key which they will use to unlock and operate the ground frames. At Morecambe, you will need to run-round, and also re-position the brake van to the other end of the train. You are booked to be relieved at Carnforth. Maximum speed is 45mph. Year: 1992.
