Description

**NOW COMPATIBLE WITH THE UPDATED TFW-BRANDED VERSION OF NORTH WALES COASTAL**

This pack has been researched using archive Working Timetables, rolling stock allocation and livery records, photographic records, and other source materials. What you see is hopefully a realistic representation of the North Wales Coast that was so popular with enthusiasts in the Summer of 1996.

At this time there was an hourly service along the coast operated by class 37s and mark 1 and 2 coaches. These were formed in rakes of four coaches, based at Edge Hill depot in Liverpool. For the Summer timetable, additional mark 1 TSOs were hired from Riviera Trains, and one of these chocolate and cream-liveried vehicles was added to most of the rakes to increase capacity. Most trains terminated at Bangor, with some serving Holyhead in the mornings, evenings, and when there were ferry connections. Budget airlines were in the future, and foot passenger traffic to and from Ireland via this route was very popular.

Supplementing these services were a handful of HSTs working through to or from London Euston, again largely timed to connect with the ferries. An hourly Manchester to Llandudno service operated by Sprinter units was accompanied by local workings between Holyhead, Llandudno, and Blaenau Ffestiniog, operated by a mixture of Sprinters and class 101 DMUs.

The main source of freight along the line was the stone quarry at Penmaenmawr, served by several trains a day conveying ballast for use in track renewals. There was also a weekly nuclear waste working from the terminal at Valley. Twice a week there was a train of acid from Hull to Mostyn. Point of Ayr Colliery at Talacre was winding down for closure before the end of the year.

SCENARIO DETAILS:

1A67 14.26 Holyhead to London Euston

Traction: 43041 + 43165

Duration: 130 minutes

Route covered: Holyhead – Crewe

On a grey August Tuesday drive the first leg of the afternoon boat train from Holyhead to London, as far as Crewe. This train connects out of the Stena Line fast ferry from Dun Laoghaire, and the Irish Ferries conventional ferry from Dublin Ferryport. Once underway you will call at Bangor, Llandudno Jn, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl, Chester, and Crewe.

1D58 07.06 Crewe to Llandudno / 2D53 08.45 Llandudno to Llandudno Jn.

Traction: 150215

Duration: 115 minutes

Route covered: Crewe – Llandudno – Llandudno Jn

You begin at Crewe and will drive 1D58, the 07.06 to Llandudno calling at all intermediate stations. After a swift turn-round you will then return to Llandudno Jn as 2D53. This unit will later form the popular mid-morning departure to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Booked for one of Longsight’s two 3-car class 101 units, maintenance requirements today have resulted in a Newton Heath-based class 150 covering the diagram. There is a 50mph TSR just past Mostyn signalbox, a 40mph TSR between Rhyl and Abergele, and a 20mph emergency speed restriction just before Colwyn Bay station.

1D79 17.18 Crewe to Holyhead – Part 1

Traction: 37427

Duration: 140 Minutes

Route covered: Crewe – Holyhead

Your stock has just arrived in Crewe from Bangor hauled by another former Cardiff Canton resident, 37429. 37427 has recently transferred to the North Wales pool of locos after a spell hauling the ‘Highland Enterprise’ service between Inverness and Edinburgh. This is a very busy commuter service along the coast, calling at Chester, Shotton, Flint, Prestatyn, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno Jn, Bangor, and Holyhead. It also provides a connection into the 20.45 Irish Ferries fast craft sailing from Holyhead, which on Fridays is extremely popular. In part 2, you will stable your stock and locomotive in Holyhead.

1D79 17.18 Crewe to Holyhead – Part 2

Traction: 37427

Duration: 30 Minutes

Route covered: Holyhead – Holyhead Depot

On arrival in Holyhead, your guard has advised that the rear coach of the train has a lighting fault. The fitters have checked and advised that the belt-drive to the dynamo underneath the vehicle has come adrift, and they require the coach on depot in order to repair it. After stabling the other vehicles in the carriage siding, you will need to take the defective coach onto the depot so that it can be repaired overnight. You will then stable 37427 on the fuel point, before booking off duty.

1H44 13.23 Holyhead to Stockport “The Irish Mancunian”

Traction: 37141

Duration: 105 minutes

Route covered: Holyhead – Chester

Saturday 20th July 1996 saw 37141 covering one of the class 37/4 diagrams on the North Wales Coast. It has arrived a few minutes late in Holyhead on the outwards working from Stockport, and with only a 19 minute booked turnaround you will need to be sharp to get away on time. After running-round the train and getting under way you will be calling at Bangor, Llandudno Jn, and Chester only. As well as heavy loadings at the start of the school holidays, many class 37 fans have turned out for a bit of unrefurbished action! This is one of only a handful of named Regional Railways services.

1K78 18.16 Holyhead to Crewe

Traction: 37418 (+ 37152)

Duration: 130 Minutes

Route covered: Holyhead – Crewe

It’s a busy Summer Saturday North Wales, and you are in charge of the last loco-hauled departure of the day from Holyhead. This train is booked to call at Bangor, Llandudno Junction, Rhyl, Chester, and Crewe. You have North Wales regular 37418 at the head of this service. Unfortunately all doesn’t appear to be going to plan further up the line.

2D71 20.22 Bangor to Crewe

Traction: 37116

Duration: 105 minutes

Route covered: Bangor – Chester

On a fine June evening, work an evening Up departure from Bangor that terminates in Chester. You have celebrity loco 37116 “Sister Dora” at the sharp end. You begin having just arrived in Bangor with the slightly delayed 1D81 18.18 from Crewe. You now need to run-round, then shunt the stock over to the Up platform ready to depart at 20.22. You will be calling at Llandudno Jn, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl, Prestatyn, Flint, Shotton, and Chester.

6F11 11.03 Penmaenmawr to Warrington Arpley

Traction: 37072

Duration: 150 minutes

Route covered: Penmaenmawr – Chester

Your train is ready for departure at Penmaenmawr loading sidings. The shunter has given you your load slip and contacted the signalman. You will follow a Bangor to Crewe passenger service to Llandudno Jn, then be held to follow a Llandudno to Manchester service. The last few days have been very humid, and today there are thunderstorms forecast which will hopefully clear the air.

7T40 13.28 Point of Ayr Colliery to Warrington Arpley

Traction: 37240 + 31407

Duration: 50 minutes

Route covered: Point of Ayr Colliery Sidings – Chester

With Point of Ayr Colliery winding down for closure, some additional trains are being operated in order to clear any stockpiled coal from the site. You are in charge of one such working, and with no type 5 loco available, Warrington have allocated 37240 and 31407 to the task. You have been given permission to depart from the colliery site so please get underway when you are ready. Propel the train into Talacre Siding 2 and then await instructions.

“The Crewe-Chester Flyer Part 1” (1Z37 06.20 Exeter St.David’s to Chester)

Traction: 37010 + 37042

Duration: 45 minutes

Route covered: Crewe – Chester

Crewe Works open weekend is in full swing, and Pathfinder Tours have a day excursion from the south west to bring visitors to the open day. As an alternative, the train will continue to Chester where passengers can spend a few hours. Drive this last leg of the outwards working, with 37010 and 37042 at the sharp end. On arrival at Chester you will need to run-round the locos ready for their return to Crewe.

“The Crewe-Chester Flyer Part 2” (1Z69 13.40 Crewe to Crewe)

Traction: 31233 + 31201

Duration: 55 minutes

Route covered: Chester – Crewe

With the Crewe Works open weekend taking place, Pathfinder Tours offered an additional attraction for diesel-haulage fans by using the stock of their day trip excursion from Exeter to operate a circular mini tour from Crewe in the afternoon. After running via Warrington, Manchester Piccadilly, and Altrincham, you join the train in Chester where it is being turned via the triangle at the west end of the station before heading to Crewe to collect the remainder of the passengers travelling back to Exeter on the main tour.
