Track covered: Birmingham New Street to Newcastle via Doncaster

Duration: 180 minutes

Date: Spring 2026

Difficulty: Medium

Brief: CrossCountry’s forgotten fourth intercity corridor between Newcastle and the South East via Doncaster has seen gradual service increases since the hourly frequency was slashed to a few trips per day during the pandemic. Departure times are now more regular but start and end points remain inconsistent.

Drive an afternoon CrossCountry service to Newcastle; calling at Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster, York, Darlington and Durham. You begin slightly delayed due to earlier disruption.

Notes:

  • The speed limits on Birmingham 2010 are significantly slower than present day operations. As such, you’re advised to treat all 70 MPH speed limits as if they were 90 MPH and all 90 MPH speed limits as if they were 125 MPH. The track curvature (mostly) allows for smooth running.
