[87] 1G21 16.52 London Euston – Birmingham New Street (2006)
11th August 2022In 2002, Virgin trains slowly started to roll out their brand new Class 390 ‘Pendolino’ fleet in line with the WCML upgrade, to enable services to run at 125mph. This ofcourse was the start of the end for loco hauled services on the mainline.
Though it wasn’t until the end of 2004 before all services to the Mindlands, Manchester, Liverpool, Scotland and Wales where worked by the Pendolinos, meaning they could start to withdraw the last remaining Class 87 and Class 90… or so they thought.
Unfortunately, like all new rolling stock, reliability issues began to arise and as a result Virgin Trains had to re-impliment loco hauled services whilst the new fleet was getting work done to improve.
Set in the summer of 2006, you are today in charge of taking 87002 hauling a rake of 9 mk3s and a DVT on a peak time service from London Euston to Birmingham New Street. You will make a fast run to Rugby, before calling at Coventry and Birmingham International.
Virgin Trains continued to operate this service with a Class 87 (Using both 87002 and 87006) until December 2006, when 87002 had the honours of hauling the last set on the 22nd. (Though Virgin Trains would once again have revert to loco hauled a few years later as a result of the Graygrigg incident using a Class 90).
All passenger AI have been taken from the May 2006 WTT, unfortunately this only shows passenger workings and no freight so I have added a couple to add some realism though are fictional. All liveries are within the time period.

Updated 12/08/2022 – Player train consist updated and AI Collision sorted.
Brilliant scenario, Enjoyed drive this all the way thought and seeing diffent AI liverys.
Thank you! Yes the ‘noughties’ was a time with many liveries both post privitisation and pre.
An excellent scenario, Thank you. Must admit having read vanbasher’s comment I deleted the 1800 Birmingham-London and all went well.
Thank you.
Yeah the AI ended up doing some weird shunt moves at Coventry to get to the platform but it was a simple fix and has been updated along with adding the relevant DVT for the service.
This was a scorching scenario until departing Birmingham International… an AI collision ended the run there (think the train involved was the 18:00 Birmingham-London). A couple of other minor things to correct..
In the drivers briefing it says maximum speed is 100mph, however an 87 with MK3’s was passed for 110mph.
Also, the DVT on the rear of this diagram in real life was normally 82101-101 Squadron with white cab roof. Or 82126 Wembley Traincare Centre with Gold nameplates & black roof, both of those skins available in the VTWC Loco Hauled pack on here.
Other than that Brad this was a lovely drive.
Hi mate thank you for the feedback, I have updated the scenario to correct the above 🙂
