2F69 Crewe – Liverpool Lime St – March 1993
1st January 20252F69 1900 Crewe – Liverpool Lime St – 29 March 1993
This is a scenario with it’s roots firmly in reality.
In early 1993 a shortage of EMUs, particularly Class 304 units, meant that some Liverpool-Crewe local trains were turned over to Loco Hauled operation, using RRNW’s Class 31/4 fleet and coaches.
Take 31455 ‘Our Eli’, named in memory of Blackpool North Driver Bill Baildon, on an evening run to Liverpool on a cool and cloudy evening.
Can you keep to EMU timings (and keep the passengers warm), while stopping in the right place at some of the short platforms?
There will be a follow-up scenario of the return trip to Crewe, but with 31462 providing the power – the locos were commonly turned over at Liverpool, rather than shunt-released.

A very nice one, thanks!
Return journey to Crewe in the works.
A very enjoyable scenario. Cheers
Ran well, couldn’t keep to time but a good drive !
Very enjoyable.
Many thanks.
Ah, that’s a shame – the timing is set not to keep time perfectly, but to make Lime Street within “Time to 3”, which is generally acceptable, but it does require a bit of route knowledge, e.g. knowing your braking points and judging the slightly variable performance you can get each time you load up something with AP traction.
There are some interesting performance logs of these runs (but not this one specifically) online:
