Transpennine Express operate three direct trains per day from Glasgow Central to Liverpool Lime Street. You drive the 07:44 departure to Preston; calling at Lockerbie, Carlisle, Penrith, Oxenholme and Lancaster along the way.

For driver training and route knowledge purposes, one of these special TPE services per day run down the Whifflet Line, avoiding Motherwell and rejoining the WCML just before Carluke. Be prepared to snake your way through Glasgow’s southeastern suburbs at a speed you aren’t used to travelling in an 802.

Inaccuracies

• This version of the WCML North appears to predate the electrification of the Whifflet Line so you must travel on this section on diesel mode. You’re instructed to change power at Polmadie because it’s a more memorable location but changing at Rutherglen South Junction would be more accurate.
• Class 397s swapped with Class 802s.
• Class 195s swapped with Class 158s.
