The Class 390 ‘Pendolino’ units were built in 2001-2005 by Alstom at Washwood Heath. Originally 53 units
were built, four additional units were constructed in 2010-2012 by Alstom at Savigliano in Italy.

The Class 390 units entered service with Virgin Trains West Coast in 2002. The units were planned to
operate at 140 mph on the upgraded West Coast Main Line, however the project ran over budget. As a result
the Class 390 units were limited to 125 mph.

They operate on West Coast Main Line services from London Euston to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and
Scotland. Today the Class 390 units are operated by Avanti West Coast.
